"This is Waffen-SS soldier. This is an elite soldier armed with a MP-40 submachine gun. He can fire his weapon while moving."— Official game quote
These guys can and will run through your lines if not killed quickly. They are one of three German units who can move and fire at the same time, and their MP-40 is more accurate than a Tommy Gun over long distances. In other words, they are a copy of your scout, but without any recon abilities and with more rifle skill. Their job is to kill your high-priority soldiers (like a medic or SpecOps) while keeping on running and avoiding your infantry's bullets. A sniper, or any mid-rifle skilled soldier, could fix this dude up really good. They CAN be engaged in CQC; they will stop and fight back if engaged.
Look out, Waffen SS have their own blitz!
The Waffen-SS was a Nazi military force. It was the armed wing of the SS, a part of the Nazi Party. The Waffen-SS fought throughout World War II and grew from three regiments to over 38 divisions. It served alongside the regular army, but was never formally part of it, due to Adolf Hitler's wish for the Waffen SS to become an elite police force once the war was won. During times of peace, it remained under the control of Himmler, through the SS operational command office. Upon mobilization, however, its control was handed over to the High Command of the Armed Forces.
At first, membership was open to "Aryans" only, in accordance with the racial policies of the Nazi state, but in 1940, Hitler authorized the formation of units composed largely or solely of foreign volunteers and conscripts, and by the end of the war, ethnic non-Germans made up approximately 60% of the Waffen-SS. Many SS troops guarding POWs had a tattoo of their blood group under their armpit.
The Skull & Cross bones found on notable SS officer caps is a symbol standing for "only in death should duty end," meaning SS officers would fight to the death or commit suicide if faced by capture.
The S.S. was originally an elite body guard for Hitler and his personal retinue in the late 1920's to mid 1930, they were brutal and effective but they still weren't a dominant military power in Germany. By the 1930's, ranks were swelling at an incredible rate and soon the SS was a very distinct military power in pre-war Germany, their only rival being the S.A., but after a few years of internal struggle the SS gained the upper hand and the S.A. was disbanded into the Wehrmacht, the SS, and other military organizations in Germany. With Himmler at the head, the SS continued their ascension... Contrary to popular belief, only SS tank crews and SS foot soldiers in parade uniforms wore black.
- He is the guy that makes a Frenchie scream during a failed sabotage mission.
- There is a bug that makes the Waffen SS keep moving for a few seconds after they die. This can be particularly annoying if you kill one at the bottom of the map, because if he does still reach it, he will still be counted as a flanker!
