The M16 is a fully-automatic, light caliber rifle fielded shortly after the Vietnam conflict began. Its high rate of fire, lightweight construction, and easy-to-pack ammunition have made it an ideal weapon for jungle warfare. Field reports later noted it's tendency to jam, requiring frequent field maintenance counter the rifle's reliability issues. Newly fielded cleaning kits may prove useful to the commander looking to avoid said issues.
It is good as an all-around light weapon and is currently the default primary weapon selection on the squad customization screen easily handled by most troops with no specific skill set
This variant of the M-16 assault rifle is available in one of two ways, either they A.) Complete 25 patrols without rage-quitting, or B.) Reach the rank of Colonel. This weapon's under-barrel M203 allows the ranger to fire the 40mm HE Grenades. This is a very valuable asset to have upon engaging the enemy due to it's 2 grenade increase over standard hand grenades.
This weapon is unlocked after the player is awarded the Silent Ops ribbon. Silenced weapons are highly prized for their ability to engage enemies from a distance without generating copious noise and overt status. However, the silencer does hamper certain weapon specifications, such as damage, range, and jam chance. A ranger with high stealth and combat score is recommended to counter the low accuracy, range, and damage. Also not recommended as an offensive weapon due to the weaknesses already mentioned and it's magazine size of 15.
The use of suppressors in Vietnam was uncommon and during the 1960s the US government became interested in the idea of suppressing weapons such as the Mac-10 and M-16. A company by the name of SIONICS attempted to market their silencers to the military and sent 40 suppressors unofficially to the 9th Infantry Division in early 1969. Failing to catch on, SIONICS had changed hands and the US had pulled out 6 years later.
