August 2012

  1. Today is 68 years from the start of Warsaw Uprising.
  2. United States President John F. Kennedy was aboard of Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109 during 2nd of August 1943 what got rammed by Imperial Japanese destroyer Amagiri. 2 sailors of the 13 man crew were killed and 2 were wounded. Lieutenant Kennedy (at the time) commanded and managed to save the entire surviving crew. He was awarded with Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his actions.
  3. Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev killed 225 German soldiers during Battle of Stalingrad and his 28 students in sniper school at Metiz factory killed 1 000 - 3 000 German soldiers during WWII. He also created many tactics used by modern day snipers and was awarded with 18 differend medals and rewards.
  4. In 1935, British engineer Robert Watson-Watt was working on a “death ray” that would destroy enemy aircraft using radio waves. His “death ray” instead evolved into radar.
  5. During the Nuremburg trials, the defence 'I was following orders' was disallowed.
  6. The largest airborne operation in history was Operation:Market Garden, involving almost 36 000 airborne soldiers.
  7. The largest naval battle in history was The battle of Leyte Gulf, which involved the two largest battleships in history, Yamato and Musashi.
  8. Today is 68 years since American forces defeated the last Japanese forces on Guam.
